Experience

Elpis Legal LLC (2020-present)

Represent immigrants and their families before the Departments of Homeland Security and Justice to secure benefits.  Clients include asylum seekers; survivors of human trafficking, domestic abuse, and other crimes; children brought to the United States as minors; and visa applicants eligible through family or work relationships.

Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) (2018-2020)

Represent unaccompanied minors to secure immigration benefits. Mentor and teach volunteer attorneys about how to represent kids in immigration court.  Educate and inform the immigrant community regarding available benefits. Recruit other attorneys to assist immigrant children.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (2008-2017)

Directed outreach efforts for the Blue Campaign, DHS's coordinated effort to combat human trafficking.  Provided training and information to state Attorney General offices across the country, federal government authorities in the executive and legislative branches, and private entities working to combat trafficking.  Specifically focused on the intersection of human trafficking and native populations, participating in the NCAI (National Congress of American Indians) conference as an invited speaker.

Served as an immigration officer, applying the laws on applications. Served as a supervisor of officers adjudicating first line immigration petitions. Provided mentoring and training for new officers.

The U.S. Department of Justice (2006-2008)

Represented the U.S. Attorney General in federal Courts of Appeal across the country.  Prepared written briefs, participated in mediation, and conducted oral argument on issues raised on appeal after denial of an immigration petition.

Maryland Court of Special Appeals (2003-2004)

Clerked for the Honorable Ellen Hollander, now serving as a federal judge for the State of Maryland.  Prepared materials for the Judge regarding cases across the State involving issues from criminal matters to commercial matters to property disputes.

Howard County Chair, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

Served as the lead or co-lead of Howard County's annual Out of the Darkness Walk to raise awareness and funding for suicide prevention efforts.  Supported a community suffering from mental illness (either past or present) and their loved ones.

NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland Board Member

Supported the organization leading the effort to defend, expand, and protect reproductive freedom in the state of Maryland including by engaging in advocacy efforts in Annapolis. Chaired the Chocolate Gala efforts as the organization's main annual fundraiser.

Howard County Public School System Policy 1070 Committee

Served at the invitation of the school system to rewrite and revise Policy 1070 concerning immigrants and children with immigrants within the Howard County public school system to guarantee that discrimination against anyone based on immigration status is not tolerated.

JCRC, Diversity Equity and Inclusion Working Group

Worked with the Jewish Community Relations Council to craft a survey for Howard County Public School students and their parents as well as Jewish community leaders regarding antisemitism experienced in the County and schools.  Crafted a summary of responses for presentation to HCPSS representatives and the JCRC leadership to raise awareness and advocate for education surrounding antisemitism and anti-Zionism.

Luminus (Formerly FIRN), Vice President of the Board

Focused on rebuilding a robust and financially healthy organization to serve and assist new Americans in Howard County and throughout the region. Led the organization through a change in Executive Director.
